Understanding coin grades (MS, PF, etc.)

A guide to numismatic grading scales.

Coin grading uses a 1-70 scale developed by Dr. William Sheldon.

**Grade Prefixes:**

  • MS (Mint State): Uncirculated coins
  • PF/PR (Proof): Special collector strikes
  • AU (About Uncirculated): 50-58
  • XF/EF (Extremely Fine): 40-45
  • VF (Very Fine): 20-35
  • F (Fine): 12-15
  • VG (Very Good): 8-10
  • G (Good): 4-6

**Common Grades:**

  • MS70/PF70: Perfect, no flaws under 5x magnification
  • MS69/PF69: Near perfect, tiny imperfections
  • MS67-68: Superb gem quality
  • MS65-66: Gem quality
  • MS63-64: Choice uncirculated
  • MS60-62: Uncirculated with visible marks

**Designations:**

  • CAM: Cameo (light frost on devices)
  • DCAM/UCAM: Deep/Ultra Cameo (heavy frost)
  • +: Plus grades (above average for grade)
  • : Star designation (exceptional eye appeal)

Price Impact: Each grade point can significantly affect value. An MS67 might be worth 2-3x an MS66.
